The Doctrine of the Mean or Zhongyong is both a doctrine of Confucianism and also the title of one of the Four Books of Confucian philosophy. The text is attributed to Zisi or Kong Ji, the only grandson of was published as a chapter in the Classic of Rites.. The phrase "doctrine of the mean" first occurs in Book VI, verse 29 of the Analects of Confucius:Chinese: 中庸. The Great Learning was one of the "Four Books" in Confucianism. The Great Learning had come from a chapter in the Classic of Rites which formed one of the Five Classics. It consists of a short main text attributed to the teachings of Confucius and then ten commentary chapters accredited to one of Confucius' disciples, Zengzi.

As a result of the Book of Rites' chapters, using a syncretic system and combining Daoist and Mohist beliefs, later scholars formed both the Great Learning and the Doctrine of the Mean. These two books were both believed to be written by two of Confucius' disciples one specifically being his : 예기. The collection consists of the works: Confucian Analects, The great learning, The doctrine of the mean, and The works of Mencius. This edition has both the original Chinese text and the English translation. This edition was translated and edited by James Legge. Download the book here (41 MB / pages): Category: Buddhism, Zen.
